How a Cavity Forms

A filling repairs a cavity, but it does not change what caused it

Cavities form when bacteria in the mouth break down sugars and starches, producing acid that gradually wears away tooth enamel. Left untreated, that small weak spot can deepen into the dentin layer, leading to sensitivity, pain, and eventually a need for a root canal or extraction.

A filling removes the decayed portion of the tooth and restores its strength and shape. At our studio on Decatur Square, Dr. Vibhakar also looks for the why behind each cavity, as part of our wider restorative dentistry in Decatur. Our team takes a judgment-free approach, whether it is your first filling or your fifth.

Do You Need a Filling?

Sensitivity, pain when biting, or a broken filling are reasons to book a visit

Not every cavity hurts. Many are found at a routine cleaning before you notice anything.

Sensitivity to cold or sweets?

A twinge that lingers can mean decay has worn through the enamel into the softer dentin underneath.

Pain when you bite down?

Pressure pain can point to a cavity, a crack, or a filling that no longer seals the tooth.

A filling that cracked or feels loose?

A cracked or loose filling can let new decay start underneath, so it is worth having us check the tooth soon.

Something spotted at a cleaning?

A cavity caught early usually means a smaller, simpler filling, so it pays not to wait.

Filling, Inlay, or Crown?

The size of the damage decides how we repair the tooth

We choose the option that protects the most healthy tooth structure.

Tooth-colored filling

Best for: Small to moderate cavities
Material: Composite resin bonded to the tooth
Looks: Matched to your natural shade

Ceramic inlay or onlay

Best for: Larger damage on a back tooth
Material: A custom ceramic piece
Keeps: More natural tooth than a full crown

Dental crown

Best for: Cracked or badly decayed teeth
Covers: The whole visible tooth
More: Dental crowns

Finding the Reason

We look for the pattern behind your cavities

Dr. Vibhakar reviews your health history and uses intraoral cameras and digital X-rays to see what is happening in and around the tooth. The factors we look for include:

Diet and drinks

How often teeth are exposed to sugars and acids can matter as much as how much.

Dry mouth

Less saliva means less natural protection against acid.

Home care and fluoride

Gaps in brushing, flossing, or fluoride exposure can leave weak spots.

Bite and wear

Grinding or an uneven bite can wear enamel and stress existing fillings.

Health history

Some medications and medical conditions affect saliva and decay risk.

Your plan

Once we know what drives the decay, your plan may include preventive dentistry, changes to home care, or a night guard.

Here are answers to the questions patients ask most about fillings and cavities. For anything else, call us at (404) 577-9020.

Why do I keep getting cavities?

Cavities often have more than one cause, such as how often teeth are exposed to sugars and acids, dry mouth, and gaps in home care, which is why we look for patterns instead of only filling each tooth.

Local anesthesia numbs the area, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain, and nitrous oxide is available if you feel nervous.

We place tooth-colored composite fillings that bond to the tooth and blend with its natural shade.

Reach out as soon as you can so we can check the tooth, since a cracked or loose filling can let new decay start underneath.

Often, yes. Many cavities do not hurt at first, and a cavity caught early usually means a smaller, simpler filling.

Yes. An aging silver filling can be replaced with a tooth-colored filling, or with a porcelain onlay and bonding when more of the tooth needs support.
